Discover how design can make messages more powerful.  Learn the core principles of print-based graphic design — and create impactful designs using language and typography.

Detailed Description

This one week course will help you explore Communication Design using either hand-drawn or digital techniques. In this course, you will:

  • Explore the ways in which Communication Design (graphic design) can influence a message
  • Create your own font and graphic designs
  • Build your college admissions portfolio
  • Meet experienced industry professionals
  • Learn under the direction of CCS Communication Design Chair

The Communication Design Online Intensive lead instructor will be Susan LaPorte. Susan is the chair of the CCS Communication Design department.  Her typographic work has been published in design magazines; Eye Magazine, and Emigre. Her work has also been included in AIGA Get Out the Vote series, as well as in Typography Now II and The Typographic Experiment: Radical Innovation in Contemporary Type.

Each morning and afternoon, classes will connect via Zoom sessions that will be used for small-group live video chats, demos, and lectures that teach typography.  You will work on assignments independently, develop your photoshop skills, and create portfolio-quality work. You will also have one-on-one sessions with the chair and portfolio guidance from an admissions counselor  A tentative schedule is attached.  

You will have the amazing opportunity to interact with experts in the field and get insights into the professional world of communication design. The week will culminate with individual reviews with your instructor and feedback from an admissions counselor.

This workshop can be completed by students using analog or digital tools. A pencil, a brush, marker, paper, ink, and/or a personal computer and the adobe creative suite. When possible, we will work to merge the digital and analogy in our typographic play!
